Marlin Season

Marlin Season at Los Locos is all about chasing trophy fish on the fly and experiencing some of the most rewarding days on the water. It's the time when nature is in transition, and so is the fishery, with marlin feeding aggressively before the winter months.

Your Itinerary

Day 1
The Arrival
Arrive at the Airport (Cabo, La Paz, Loreto) and be greeted by your shuttle or pick up rental car. Commute to Puerto San Carlos (5 hr, 3 hr, 2 hr scenic drives from above airports respectively) and be greeted by the Los Locos Team. Settle in and enjoy dinner before preparing for the next day’s fishing.

Fishing
All anglers meet at the Mar Y Arena Dining hall at specified time (given the night before) with a designated guide (assigned the night before). Depending on the departure time, breakfast will either be enjoyed at the Hotel or on the commute.

Anglers will make a short commute via truck bed to the local launch and go fishing for approx. 5-6 hrs before returning to the Hotel. Guests then freshen up for drinks at sunset outside the Dining Hall before heading to dinner with the crew.

Do you have rods / reels available for rent?

We do have Rods/Reels available for rent if needed. Ready to fish setups will be $50/day to rent. There is a $250 replacement fee if the rod is broken.

Does Mexico allow you to travel with your gear?

Mexico customs allows 4 rods/4 reel per person. Any additional reels/rods will be taxed 19%.

What are your recommendations for Flies?

The Los Locos Guides will provide Flies for both Marlin and Roosters, however if you wish to purchase or tie flies before your trip here are the recommendations:

Marlin: Blue over White Deceivers at 6-10 in (Most Used), Tan over White,
Black, pink/white are also options. Preferred Hooks: Ahrex SA270 or Gamakatsu SL12s 8/O (Owner Akis are another option)

Roosters: 4-6 in brown and white deceiver, blue and white deceiver, sardine and mullet imitations

What is the temperature like?

Mornings start cold at 50 degrees and feel colder running offshore. Temps warm throughout most days to 80 degrees. The Pangas keep anglers dry for the most part but depending on the roughness you might get splashed so bibs and raingear prevent an uncomfortable ride!

What fishing clothes should I bring?

Preferred Performance long sleeve shirts, cotton long sleeve shirts, long quick dry pants, buff/bandanas, Bathing suit/Board Shorts, Hat with dark-bottomed bill, Beanie, Deck Boots or preferred footwear for long hours on the bow.

Bring Bibs/Rain Jacket, Fleece or Hoodie for colder days (check forecast for San Carlos before your trip)

Bring Polarized Sunglasses. We recommend the Costa Del Mar King Tide Blue Mirrored 580 Lens or Pro Series Frames with the 580 Blue Lens.

What are the requirements to fish in Mexico?

All anglers must purchase a Mexican Fishing License.

What traveler's insurance do you recommend?

We strongly recommend enrolling with Global Rescue ($140) prior to embarking on your trip if you need to get airlifted for any medical emergency: Global Rescue Travelers Insurance.

Do we need to bring food?

All meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included in your package. Lunch will be provided on the boat daily. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the hotel’s extensive menu in the dining hall or on the grounds. A couple nights a week the Los Locos guides will treat anglers to their frequented taco stands as a meal or app before dinner.

A night out with a view of San Carlos, Lore’s is a Los Locos tradition. 1-2 nights during the week, anglers will enjoy Lore’s family-style seafood feast with beautiful vistas, excellent staff, and an authentic Baja vibe to round out the week!
